This Story Map is an update of the pest survey card that was prepared in the context of the EFSA mandate on plant pest surveillance (M-2017-0137) at the request of the European Commission. Its purpose is to guide the Member States in preparing data and information for the following flea beetles (chrysomelid species) Epitrix cucumeris (Harris, 1851), E. papa Orlova-Bienkowskaja, 2015, E. subcrinita Le Conte, 1857 and E. tuberis Gentner, 1944. These are required to design statistically sound and risk-based pest surveys in line with current international standards. Epitrix cucumeris, E. papa, E. subcrinita and E. tuberis are listed in several implementing decisions as regards emergency measures to prevent the introduction and spread of these pests within the EU. Only E. cucumeris and E. papa are known to occur in the EU, both with a restricted distribution in Spain and Portugal. Solanaceous seems to be the main host plants for these species, and the most significant one is Solanum tuberosum (i.e. potato). Climatic conditions are unlikely to limit the spread of these species across the EU and their potential distribution range overlaps with the area were potatoes are grown. Natural spread is limited but Epitrix spp. can fly short distances to colonise nearby potato plots. Soil attached to potato tubers is the most likely pathway for long-distance spread as it might contain pupae or diapausing adults. Movement of infested ware and seed potatoes within the Union territory might cause long-distance spread of the species already present. Epitrix cucumeris, E. papa, E. subcrinita and E. tuberis can only be reliably distinguished from each other and from species of the same genus using a stereomicroscope and a compound microscope, or by molecular methods. However, the symptoms by themselves are sufficient to initiate demarcation of the areas around the source of the affected tubers. Within each survey site, potato plants should be carefully examined for symptoms. On each selected potato field, it is necessary to check for the presence of host weeds (e.g. Solanum nigrum). After harvesting the potato tubers, these should be checked for the presence of symptoms.
