"New Dawn is designed to provide moral support for those struggling with personal issues. The words written around the figures remind us that "We All Get Lost Inside Our Minds" and no matter what you are going through that "You Are Not Alone". This mural encourages those in dire situations to "Be A Survivor" and incorporates the iconic symbol of the semicolon which symbolizes hope for those facing depression, addiction, self-injury, and suicide. However, this mural also speaks to every passerby; to embrace empathy and to find strength in hope...May we channel the power of our emotions to propel self-healing, listen to our allies in nature to give us guidance, and remember that even in the darkest times there is support and hope." - Miles Toland
Miles’ painting style merges naturalistic human forms with transcendental designs structured by mandalas and geometric patterns. Miles treats his art as a spiritual practice of bringing resistance into resonance, honoring the beauty in decay, and finding wisdom in nature’s forms.

Artist - Ursula X Young
Over the past twenty-five years illustrator, painter, and designer Ursula Xanthe Young has become known for her unique flowery urban fairytale illustrations. Ursula has created this mural of historic Grass Valley resident, famed Gold Rush era dancer, and early reformist, Lola Montez, through the lens of her experience and recognizable style. Lola is depicted on a background of silhouetted Grass Valley old town and Sierra landscape, using recognizable elements of Grass Valley's architecture and local flora and fauna set in the beauty of the surrounding hills and forests. Lola Montez settled in Grass Valley in 1852 and her sensational life has been portrayed in films, theater, books, music, and art.

Badua's Nisenan Mural, entitled “Solim Ni – I Sing,” features local Nisenan Tribal member Jennifer Plunkett, as she sings out to the baskets beneath the sacred Black Oak tree. Her song takes on the ghostly shape of a basket pattern used by the Nisenan Ancestors, while the flicker feather regalia comes from the Earth and entwines itself around her. Culture is embedded in the Nisenan people in this way Now is the time to sing.
Born on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, Nikila is a self-taught multimedia artist, designer, photographer, and performer inspired by an earth-based wisdom of Roots and Culture. Mother and community organizer, her work as an advocate for youth, indigenous, and environmental rights has played an influential role within shaping her foundation as a "Cultural Community Artist".

101 Mill Street - Grass Valley
Artist - Justin Lovato
Lovato's mural seeks to honor the community and natural environment of Grass Valley by providing a striking but aesthetically modest scene. The mural reflects the area's rich gold mining history, the Sierra Nevada foothills and mountains, the Yuba RIver, the Lake Tahoe landscape, and other cultural and historical aspects of the Grass Valley area. It features about 15 species of plant life from the local taxonomy in a setting featuring the beautiful Yuba River. Lovato incorporated the name of the city designed in a type that resembles the gold country era aesthetic which runs throughout downtown.

By placing the Yuba River into a different context – a subterranean light well – it creates fresh perspective, the new discovery of an ageless trove. From this new vantage point, the river seems suddenly exotic and enchanting, like finding Brigadoon on a journey to the center of the Earth. Not only the Centurions might detect that it suggests a shift in environmental consciousness. Gold is what brought people here long ago, yet the rustic beauty and friendly community is why people stay.
Down below, the mural also features former Grass Valley mayor and community activist, Howard Levine, performing his routine reading of the Del Oro Theater's energy meter.
