Forest Preservation and Regeneration Sustainability Impacts

Capstone Research Project on Tiny Forest Implementation at a local Montessori School in Las Colinas, Texas.

Tiny Forests

Tiny forests, also known as the "Miyawaki Method" is a concept created by Akira Miyawaki. He is a botanist, an expert in plant ecology, and specializes in seeds and forests.

Miyawaki came up with the concept to combat deforestation by using unutilized space with native plant species in a compact design that consists of layers of larger, medium smaller trees as well as a shrub layer to encourace growth. By studying trees at local shrines and temples, he realized that these trees were natives that belonged to the primary forest. When he discovered

There are other similar methods or terms known as agroforestry, bioswales, rain gardens, food forests, and forest regeneration.

Fast growing forests that have the environmental benefits of carbon sequestation, biodiversity, and forest regeneration.

Forests can take up to 100-200 years to grow, when a Miyawaki forest can grow much more rapidly in the span of 10-20 years.

Progress and Continuation of Tiny Forests around the World

Aim and purpose:

To find solutions that counterbalance the effects of deforestation caused by urban development.

How can we replicate a tiny forest model with North Central Texas' native plant species on unused land to encourage the environmental benefits of biodiversity, carbon sequestration, and community involvement?

  • Policy plan that has an emphasis on the importance of nature and dedicating more land to forest perservation and forest regeneration.
  • By providing and encouraging forest implementation that can improve the air and the health and quality of life for people in urban settings.
  • Getting youth involved: Inspiring children through teaching the importance of nature and forests.
  • Emphasize the theraputic value of trees and plants.
  • Apply to transportation corridors: Sound pollution, emissions absorption, tree canopy coverage.

Identify Native Species

Phone Applications to Identify Native Plant Species and Wildlife

PictureThis is an app that identifies what plants you take pictures of. 7 day free trial, and then you have the option of paying $30 a year.

Once the plant is identified, the app will give information on the plant such as a desriptions, tips on how to garden, types of wildlife the plant attracts, fun facts, condition requirements, care guide, and more.

INaturalist

INaturalist is a social network app and website that allows users to take pictures of biodiversity and share the location. The app attempts to identify the type of species by giving options and pictures that try to match your picture. People can then comment and confirm or have discussions.
