Both Buddhism and Christianity were faiths of the book; the book in east Asian Buddhism at this time being primarily in the form of a manuscript paper scroll [EXH23, EXH25, EXH66, EXH71, EXH88]— although printing starts to be seen from the 8th century and codex from soon after—while typically that of Christianity was a manuscript parchment codex [EXH7, EXH14, EXH15, EXH65, EXH72, EXH73]. The core of the sacred texts of Buddhism were formed of the historical Buddha’s lectures—called sutra—which were initially passed down orally among his disciples but in the 1st century BC were transcribed to form one of the three sections (baskets) of the Buddhist canon, the Tripiṭaka. The other two sections were the monastic rules (vinaya—see EXH66) and philosophic works (abhidarma—see EXH23). These texts, by this time translated into Literary Sinitic from Pali or other intermediary languages, were brought to Korea and Japan by pilgrim monks and others and then copied [EXH71 and see our pilgrimage story].
