A Story Map on Story Maps

An example of how ArcGIS Story Maps works

This story map is here to show you the different types of content blocks. Story Maps divides the options into "Basic," "Media," and "Immersive," which is how they are organized here.

Basic

The basic options include text formatting options and some elements that add functionality to the page.

This is a Header

This is a subheader

And this is a paragraph. Headers and subheaders help introduce sections and break up a page. You want to keep your text concise and to the point as people do not tend to read long text blocks online, especially in formats like Story Maps. (Longform journalism is an exception to this general rule.)

When first building your project, you can use  "dummy text"  to play with layout. This is helpful if you do not have your final text. This is what it looks like: Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit. Aenean commodo ligula eget dolor. Aenean massa.

Page Elements

Story Maps have a few elements that add functionality to the page. Buttons, like the one below, are good for creating links that you want to draw special attention to.

You can use the separator line, like the below, to help organize the layout of the page by indicating section breaks. This makes the page a bit easier for the user to navigate and take in the information.

Media Examples

In the media options, you can add maps, images, image galleries, videos, and audio. You can also embed other forms of media such as TimelineJS timelines and 360 degree images as well as create a swiping effect between two images or online maps.

Map

This map was created using the "express map" option. More in-depth maps can be created in the ArcGIS Online's mapping application. (See more on creating maps.) [ADD link]

Images

Images, maps, videos and embedded objects can be set to different sizes. This is an image set to small.

Image Gallery

Image galleries can be set to small, medium, and large, which affects how many images appear in each row. This gallery is set to medium.

Puffin ( Boaworm ), Icelandic horse ( Andreas Tille ), Orange Icelandic poppy ( Chanticleer Garden ), Yellow Icelandic poppy ( Chanticleer Garden ), Purple Sandpiper ( Gordon Leggett ), Common Pied Oystercatcher ( Richard Bartz )

Video

Videos can be added by uploading or linking. When linking, it is best to find a source that will be available for an extended period of time as you do not want your media to go dead. Uploading is the best option for all media as it will "live" with the project, but uploading is not always possible with video.

Like with all media, video can be displayed in a variety of sizes. Here it is floated left. This is a good option when wanting to include a piece of media that you don't want to dominate the page.

When clicking to the right of the video, the plus sign appears and a new content block can be created that floats right.

You want to make sure that you have enough logical content to put next to a floating piece of media. Otherwise, it can feel random and jarring.

Audio

Audio can come from various places including podcast sites and SoundCloud, like the below.

Embed

The embed option allows you to bring in a variety of mediums that don't fall under image, video, or audio. Below is as 3D model. Other objects you can add include things like timelines and 360 degree images. (On objects that can be embed, the embed code is usually found under the "share" option.)

Swipe

Swipe creates a swiping effect between two images or online maps .

A swipe effect that allows you to switch between two satellite views of Iceland. In one image the skies are clear in the other Iceland is covered by clouds.

Immersive

Slides show

This option creates a more traditional slide show experience. Note that the space in the text box is intended to be especially limited.

Sidecar

Sidecar creates a slide-like effect with text and interactivity, if certain types of media are chosen, e.g., maps, swipe, and embed. There are two options sidecar with a floating panel and one with a docked (or fixed) pannel.

Sidecar with floating panels:

Note that panels have different background options and can contain media as well as text.
