ArcGIS Online basics - Map Viewer Classic

In this video tutorial - Discover ArcGIS Online, you will learn how to search for a location on the map, measure a feature, explore the ocean basemap and create a heat map in the Map Viewer Classic.

Video Tutorial

Part 1

  • Changes to part 1 of this tutorial (not included in the video) - Sign in section and search for web map
  • Sign into ArcGIS Online at  https://www.arcgis.com  OR through your school account.  Click Map  Note: If the default is the Map Viewer, click on Open in Map Viewer Classic (top right) to use the appropriate one for this tutorial.
  • Click Home and type in “Discover ArcGIS Online”  in the Search window.
  • Under Filters > deactivate radio button   Note: Make sure you deactivate the radio button that only searches in your school organization. We want to search all of ArcGIS Online.
  • Under Filters >  Item type > Maps >Web maps
  • Results> Click Open in Map Viewer Classic. Note: If you see Open in Map Viewer on your screen, click on the … and select Map Viewer Classic.

Search for your school or home in ArcGIS Online!

Now you're ready to get started! Sign into ArcGIS Online via  ArcGIS.com  OR through your school account. Note: When you click on "Map" - if the default is the Map Viewer, click on Open in Map Viewer Classic (top right) to use the appropriate viewer for this tutorial.
