Visual Analysis

Sample of what this might look like

The two most striking elements of Stoopendaal’s Orbis Terrarium are, first, the portrayal of the whole world; and second, the illustrations placed at each corner. The perspective has divided and flattened the earth into a double hemisphere, linked with equatorial lines. In keeping with the desire (and hubris) of early modern Europeans to see creation in a glance, the map also reserves space for planetary orbits – despite sections of the earth (such as northwest North America and the Antipodes) being still unknown and so left unfinished. The ships scattered across the oceanic space are not direct representations of contemporary sailing routes so much as evidence of European ambitions for overseas trade.

A free-floating California and an unfinished northwest coast of America.

The illustrations (which, visually, also serve to fill the space between the round globes and a rectangular sheet) feature figures and stories from classical Greco-Roman mythology, across the realms of air, earth, and water. Note especially that at the bottom right, showing a cornucopia spilling the bounty of Earth’s goodness, with the demigod Pan.

A cornucopia overflows with the bounty of cultivated nature.
