
AOT Technician I/II

The Position
An AOT Technician performs land surveying duties under the supervision of the Agency's licensed Land Surveyor. Working alongside our two field crews, an AOT Tech is responsible for performing:
- Survey Field Work
- GPS/GNSS Instrument Operation
- CAD File Creation, Editing, & Analysis
- Project Research & Planning
- Field Reconnaissance
- 3D Terrestrial LiDAR Scanning
An AOT Tech is familiar with the principles and methods of surveying - including, but is not limited to route surveying, boundary surveying, and construction surveying.

Preferred Qualifications
Candidates should have an understanding of mathematics and some familiarity with basic computations relevant to land surveying. They should be able to apply analytical thinking to make sound decisions related to projects and field safety. Experience operating survey instruments (robotic total stations, data collectors, GPS/GNSS Units, etc.) or working with CAD design software is preferred. Applicants must be able to work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to outdoor elements.
Job Duties
In the Field
The AOT Tech position supports our survey crews to complete survey requests for all sections of the Agency of Transportation. This includes training in VTrans data standards, instrument operation, and field safety procedures. Candidates will learn proper use and maintenance of robotic total stations, data collectors, GNSS units, static terrestrial LiDAR scanners, digital levels and other equipment. An AOT Tech should be prepared to maintain detailed field notes, photos, and tie information related to requests.
In the Office
Beyond working in the field, this position will also have the opportunity to learn the Agency's unique standards and requirements for processing and submitting survey data. The AOT Tech will become familiar working with the Agency's CAD design software, Bentley MicroStation and InRoads. This position will learn the ins-and-outs of processing and editing field data as well as how to create base maps and 3D ground models that support project design.

- AOT Technician I - Pay Grade 21 (Step 1) @ $22.29/hour
- AOT Technician II - Pay Grade 22 (Step 1) @ $23.55/hour

Level Designations

AOT Technician Level I
This entry-level position does not require applicants to have survey experience, though some field experience is preferred. Primary duties for this position focus on learning the daily field practices and procedures and assisting the VTrans Survey Crew. This position will be heavily focused on instrument operation training in the field.
AOT Technician Level II
This level position requires some relevant survey experience. Candidates should have some familiarity with CAD software as a AOT Tech II will be responsible for downloading and performing preliminary analysis of survey data. This position will also assist the Terrestrial LiDAR Team with smaller, less complex scans. Applicants for this position are expected to be proficient in the AOT Tech I duties described above.
