Lightning Presentations
These are a fast (no more than 5 minutes) introduction and explanation of a teaching technique that is working well for PNW faculty.
Syllabus Quiz as a Predictor of Students' Success
Hubert Izienicki, Associate Professor of Sociology
This presentation explores the uses of the syllabus quiz beyond testing course policies and procedures. The syllabus quiz can help instructors predict how well the students will do in a course overall and if they are going to pass it at all. During the presentation, I will show you how you can use it in your own courses.
How "NOT TO" Intimidate Your Students as a Physicist
Neeti Parashar, Professor of Physics
Students come with a preconceived notion that their physics professor will be smart, snobbish, and perhaps intimidating. Unquestionably the hardest subject, their fears are justified. I shall talk about how I broke that barrier with my students.
Taking the Syllabus Day of Class by Storm
John Durocher, Nils K. Nelson Endowed Professor of Integrative Human Health
This presentation will cover how to make the first day of class more than a “boring syllabus day.” I will briefly outline the importance of including the instructor’s background, specific tips for student success, and my recent use of the syllabus recon.
Collaborative Quizzing: Active learning? Deliberation? Communication? Or all the above?
Dianne Hoekstra, Clinical Assistant Professor Several semesters ago I implemented collaborative quizzing. I had previously used MINI quizzes to encourage students to keep current with course content between the high stakes modular quizzes. This new collaborative format involved the conversion of the on-line MINI quizzes to paper quizzes. Questions are intentionally difficult and portray a variety of question types, i.e. select all that apply, short answer with math calculations, and prioritization. During the collaboration period, I circulate to encourage discussion. Collaborative quizzing fosters deliberation and communication within a group. Surprisingly, the entire class attained 100% on a collaborative quiz only once.
Rolling the Dice for Success
Rhon Teruelle, Assistant Professor of Mass Communication and Social Media
This is a collaborative group activity that reviews what the students have learned. Using the dice for levity, a "roller" from each group will roll the dice. The resulting number will correspond to the number of points that they have to articulate drawing from what they have learned, what they found interesting, or something that they already knew but was reinforced by the lesson. This end of class activity is designed to enhance active learning.
Fostering a Safe Yet Brave Learning Environment
Ying Luo, Associate Professor of Computer Information Technology
Learning often requires us to leave our comfort zones, which can be uncomfortable and even feel dangerous. In the classroom, it is vital that students feel safe and respected while expressing themselves. Simultaneously, they should be encouraged to engage in challenging discussions or activities without fear of judgment or ridicule. It's crucial to strike a balance between providing a sense of security and encouraging individuals to explore beyond their comfort zones. In this 5-minute presentation, I will share my teaching strategies for creating such a conducive atmosphere for meaningful learning and both individual and collective growth.
Boosting Chemistry Learning with AI-Driven Note-Taking
Farai Gombedza, Assistant Professor of Chemistry
In this session we will demonstrate how Otter AI, a transcription and note-taking assistive tool powered by artificial intelligence (AI), was utilized to automatically generate notes from general chemistry lecture presentations. Otter AI captures audio from lecture presentations and transcribes it to text- notes, improving the accuracy of recorded information. We will discuss the effectiveness of the software in improving the accuracy of recorded information.
Hands-On Learning to Master Tricky Topics
Michelle Spaulding, Associate Professor of Biological Sciences
Education activities with tactile components representing abstract concepts are common in K-12 science classrooms. However, this strategy often vanishes in higher level education. The cells of our active immune system must be screened so only functional ones that will not attack our own body tissues are released. Students often report feeling like they do not understand the concept. I have developed a hands-on exercise to explore these concepts via laminated paper cut outs accompanied by a series of simple questions. This activity only takes about 10 to 15 minutes, but has greatly increased student confidence and performance on related examinations.
Elevate Learning with SCREENPAL's Effortless Screen Recording!
David Pratt, Associate Professor of Education
Discover the simplicity and speed of screen recording for presentations to your students, or empower your students to record their own screens! Uncover the free recording capabilities of SCREENPAL and explore countless ways to enhance your teaching or let your students demonstrate their knowledge.
