West Felixstowe walking, wheeling and cycling improvements

Have Your Say

Suffolk County Council is asking for your views on walking and cycling improvements we’re planning to make to the Maidstone Road and Grange Road area in Felixstowe.

This area is a busy one at school drop-off and pick-up times as two primary schools are located here - SET Felix school and Grange Community school. You told us in earlier feedback (in 2023) that you would like to see improvements to make the area safer for all those families and children walking and cycling to school.

In addition, the population of Felixstowe is expected to grow over the next few years with a new neighbourhood planned to the north of the town which will result in more people travelling in the area.

The improvements we're proposing aim to:

  • Give you more options to walk, cycle or wheel for local journeys
  • Make it easier and safer for families and children walking and cycling to school by providing more space, upgrading crossings and creating safer junctions
  • Improve air quality and reduce air pollution for children and local residents
  • Make the roads less busy for those who have to use them

Please tell us what you think

We have drawn up some ideas for the walking and cycling improvements and we’re holding a consultation so that you can give us your feedback. We may not be able to deliver all of the changes immediately, so your feedback is important on helping us decide what is most important. The consultation closes on the 20 th  December. You can have your say by filling in a survey using the link at the bottom of this page.

Once the consultation has closed, we will consider your feedback and and review the designs to decide which parts of will have the biggest impact, and then finalise these elements. We then hope to be able to deliver these during 2025.

A summary report of the consultation will be published in  spring 2025 which will be available to download from the  Way To Go website .

If you have any questions or would like a printed copy of the survey posted to you please contact  customer.services@suffolk.gov.uk  or call us on 0345 603 1842

Community Events

We will be holding a community event to give you the opportunity to discuss the proposals with us and give feedback in person:

Thank you for taking part in our consultation – we look forward to hearing your views.

The Route

The route runs from the northern end of Maidstone Road where it meets the High Street, over the railway line and into Grange Road. It then follows Ferry Lane across to where it goes under the A14.

Our vision is to make the neighbourhoods around Maidstone Road, Grange Road and Ferry Lane safer and easier to walk and cycle, particularly for those children and families who go to the two local primary schools. We want to hear from the community on what the challenges are and which solutions you think would make the biggest difference to you.

You can scroll through the route on the interactive map below, or click on the 'Map' tab above to go straight to a static map of the route. The interactive map can be zoomed in and out by using the controls in the bottom right.

The phrase shared use path is used in the descriptions below. These are a path of at least 3 metres wide that people can both walk and cycle on.

1

Maidstone Road/High Street junction

Upgrade the existing zebra crossing to a parallel crossing, which means that cyclists are allowed to cross here too.

Make the width of the entrance onto Maidstone Road narrower and give more priority for those walking and cycling.

2

Maidstone Road shared use

Widen the pavement on the west side so that it becomes a shared walking and cycling path. Access to private driveways will not be affected.

Introduce traffic calming measures to slow cars down as they turn in from the southern end

3

SET Felix primary school

Slow down traffic by increasing the size of the existing raised table and widening the pavement.

Restrictions on parking outside the school.

4

Maidstone/Seaton Road junction

Introduce traffic calming measures to slow cars down as they turn into this section of Maidstone Road.

5

Maidstone Road shared use

Widen the pavement so that it becomes a shared path for use by pedestrians and cyclists.

Remove the existing metal railings to make a clear, continuous walking and cycling path.

6

Grange Road shared use

Widen the pavement so that it becomes a shared path for use by both pedestrians and cyclists.

7

Grange Farm Avenue roundabout

Make the width of the junction narrower to reduce the distance needed to cross. Buses will still be able to turn in both directions as they do currently.

Either build a wider traffic island or install a zebra crossing to make it easier and safer for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the road.

8

Wadgate Road junction

Convert the mini roundabout to a t-junction which will make it easier and safer for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the road.

9

Grange Community school

Install a larger raised table and widen the pavement to slow vehicles down as they approach the school.

No parking will be allowed outside the school.

10

Mill Lane junction

Convert the roundabout to a t-junction which will make it easier and safer for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the road.

11

Ferry Lane/Chelsworth Avenue

Widen the pavement at the junction of Ferry Lane and Chelsworth Road as well as introduce new signage at the existing crossing

12

Ferry Lane

Existing quiet route for walking and cycling

13

Wesel Avenue crossing

New parallel crossing where Ferry Lane crosses over Wesel Avenue, which will allow both pedestrians and cyclists to cross

14

Ferry Lane crossing

New parallel crossing on Ferry Lane, which will allow both pedestrians and cyclists to cross

15

Ferry Lane shared use

Wider pavements on Ferry Lane to give enough space for both pedestrians and cyclists to share the space
