Comprehensive and Land Use Plan Overview
Last Updated January 2025

Introduction
Comprehensive and Land Use Plans are future-oriented tools used by local governments to shape their communities. Learn more about Comprehensive and Land Use Plans below.

The Comprehensive Plan
A Comprehensive Plan is a document that provides an overview of a community's history, current condition, and future vision. A Comprehensive Plan gives a vision for a community's future by listing goals and objectives to achieve overtime, typically within ten to twenty years.
Land use, zoning, transportation, utilities (water, electric, sewer), recreation, housing, economic development, infrastructure, and implementation strategies are elements that are often addressed in a Comprehensive Plan.

The Land Use Plan
Land Use Plans decide and denote the most appropriate use for a plot of land. Like Comprehensive Plans, Land Use Plans also help communities prepare for the future of an area, typically over a ten to twenty year period. Land use can be designated into different categories such as residential, commercial, agricultural, industrial, and mixed-use.

Although both Comprehensive and Land Use Plans are future-oriented, it is recommended that they be reviewed and revised every three to five years. This ensures that the plans are still up to date and relevant to the communities that they represent.
Each plan document in this application is identified by its year of adoption. A colored halo around each plan's point on the map indicates whether the plan has been adopted before 2000 (red halo), between 2000 and 2009 (blue halo), or 2010 and after (green halo). The legend to the right shows the colors and the associated adoption years with each.
