What is Zydeco?

Zydeco is a form of music that originated in Louisiana. It can be heard in many places such as Cajun restaurants, in the streets of New Orleans, and much more. Zydeco was born in the early 80’s in southwest Louisiana. It is a mixture of French, Spanish, African, and Caribbean Influences. A man named Clifton Chenier is known as the king of zydeco because he is believed to be the inventor of this music.

Zydeco music came from all across the world but was mainly expressed in Louisiana. Zydeco came from places like Europe also which is where zydeco got its Cajun half from. Cajun music was brought from Europe over 200 years ago. Zydeco was first heard in the southwestern parts of Louisiana.

Clifton was born in Opelousas, LA. He started his career in 1955 when he signed with Specialty Records. One of his popular songs is named "Zydeco sant pas sale".
