Madrid - the linear city
Have you ever had that feeling in a city you toured with a tourist guide that what you see doesn't live up to your expectations? The heritage sites that were supposed to be breath-taking are just inaccessible, expensive, crowded and completely different from what you saw in the picture?
Don’t you have the feeling that the heritage narration is imposed on you by some authorities? Why it is always about city centres and big buildings? Does it mean outside the centre of the city people live disconnected from heritage?
And what about knowing the city? Why is it always about old, central parts and authoritarian established heritage?
Let’s discover Madrid from the different perspective in a “linear tour”. We will literally cross and cut through the city. After that we would get a cross-sectional picture!
How do you think, how tourist guide books differ from the real experience of the city. How do you think now, what is heritage?
What kind of story do you got walking on your own feet through Madrid? What is Madrid's heritage? Are these only buildings and places you encounter in guide books? Who is responsible for narrating about heritage?
This map was set up during HERIGEOCARTO workshop led by dr Radosław Piskorski.
