British Crusade Sites

A Spatial Visualization of Crusade Remembrance

This series of maps provides a spatial representation of Corliss Slack's  British Crusade Sites . In this project, Slack documents sites in the British Isles with historical connections to the Crusades of the 11th – 13th centuries CE. Many of these sites are connected to objects brought home by crusaders and served as local devotional sites. Overall, the project collects examples of individual strategies for crusade remembrance in order to spark conversations about crusading practice and belief.

There are two ways to explore the sites:

  1. An Interactive Map that displays all sites at once and provides full site descriptions and bibliographies in pop-ups.
  2. A Map Tour that displays all sites alphabetically and provides a brief description for each.

All text, images, and other information shown in the maps is drawn from the British Crusade Site's manuscript, which can be viewed embedded below or at the American Society for Church History's  Research and Teaching Archive  (TARA).
