Most runaways remained within their home state, but certainly not all. Whether because of family ties, knowlegde of the land or some other factor the reward of remaining close to home often outweighed the risk of remaining near one's enslaver. This is the story of those who did not remain, whose enslavers sought their return in New York State despite their origin elsewhere, gathered from the advertisements enslavers put up.
