Ottawa Faith Community Capacity Building Program

In partnership with Watersheds Canada

Introduction

As a collaborative endeavour between Greening Sacred Spaces and Watersheds Canada, the Ottawa Faith Community Capacity Building Program (OFCCBP) emerged as a beacon of environmental stewardship rooted in community empowerment. Over two years, 2022-2023, this program embarked on a transformative journey alongside faith communities, equipping them with the necessary tools and resources to address freshwater stewardship needs within their local communities.

The OFCCBP extended its reach to encompass rural and urban faith communities across Ottawa. This cross-sectoral collaboration underscored a shared commitment to nurturing community-driven initiatives that enhanced environmental sustainability and fostered meaningful relationships within and beyond faith-based circles.

Faith-based organizations have increasingly recognized their role in environmental conservation efforts in global ecological challenges. As the United Nations Environment Programme highlighted, faith-based organizations play a significant role in restoring nature and fostering environmental stewardship. The OFCCBP aligned with this global movement by empowering faith communities to actively engage in freshwater stewardship, thereby contributing to the broader effort of restoring and protecting natural ecosystems.

Amid the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which exacerbated feelings of isolation and hindered community engagement, the OFCCBP emerged as a vital lifeline. By providing essential support structures, including microgrant opportunities of up to $1000, the program empowered faith communities to overcome barriers and actively contribute to preserving freshwater habitats and quality.

Microgrant opportunities were central to the program's success, which offered financial assistance of up to $1000 to catalyze projects ranging from pollinator garden installations to educational workshops. Moreover, OFCCBP extended personalized guidance and community support to facilitate the seamless execution of each project, ensuring that participants could maximize their impact and reach.

As exemplified by the achievements of participating communities like the Kanata Muslim Association, Carleton Memorial United Church and others, the OFCCBP is not merely a program but a catalyst for tangible change. By nurturing a culture of environmental stewardship rooted in faith values, this initiative paves the way for a more harmonious relationship between humanity and nature, one community at a time.

Freshwater Stewardship Engagement Toolkit

At the core of the Ottawa Faith Community Capacity Building Program (OFCCBP) lies the innovative  Freshwater Stewardship Engagement (FSE) toolkit . This comprehensive resource is a guiding light for participants, empowering them to embark on meaningful environmental initiatives within their communities. Designed to be accessible and practical, the FSE toolkit offers over 150 invaluable resources, case studies, and local knowledge explicitly tailored for Ottawa and surrounding areas. Through this toolkit, participants gain the knowledge and tools necessary to identify, plan, and implement impactful projects aligned with their faith community's values and the unique environmental challenges of their locality. Whether learning about pressing issues or taking action to preserve freshwater ecosystems, the FSE toolkit equips faith communities with the means to make a tangible difference in their environment.
