The Business Improvement Grant (BIG) Program helps building and business owners improve their physical businesses and storefronts. Since 2021, the  Gainesville Community Reinvestment Area  (GCRA) has awarded 10 businesses a total investment of $663,748 through the BIG Program.

These 10 grants and two more in progress represent a combined planned investment of $1.533 million in the GCRA district between 2021 and 2023. The city contributed $663,748 through the program, while private sector investments totaled $869,500.  

On November 21, 2024, the City of Gainesville approved updates to the BIG Program, expanding the grant to include interior work and permanent systems. $453,000 in grant funds are allocated for fiscal year 2025. This program is expected to generate over $1 million in business improvements when fully utilized and combined with private investments.

• $1.533 million in Total Planned Investment  

From 2021 to 2023, the BIG Program awarded 11 businesses, investing a total of $663,747.86 in the GCRA district.

The BIG Program offers reimbursable funds to eligible building and business owners wanting to improve their physical businesses and storefronts.  

The grant can help with projects like:   

• Fixing or upgrading building systems (HVAC, plumbing, electrical)   
• Repairs to ensure structural safety   
• Improvements to the building’s façade (signs, awnings, or decorative elements) 
• Landscaping or security upgrades   
• Renovations to meet ADA compliance   

The building must be at least 15 years old. Business and buildings must be located within the program boundary area, with extra points for properties within the downtown core, or one of these four neighborhoods.
