The Brattleboro Walk/Bike Master Plan, adopted in March of 2023, recommended a corridor safety study for Canal Street to determine the optimal bicycle and pedestrian facilities.

Brattleboro Town Plan, 2018, recommends the creation of complete streets that are safe for travel by all users of all abilities and that promote bicycle and pedestrian mobility. The Town Plan also recommends improvements to stormwater management.

Brattleboro Downtown Plan, adopted in January 2021, recommends improvements to routes, access and circulation for pedestrians and bicyclists; incorporation of green stormwater practices and landscaping; and the use of creative placemaking to enliven and revitalize public spaces.

Design for Resilience in Brattleboro's Lower Whetstone Brook Corridor, completed in January 2017, explored green infrastructure tools that would reduce stormwater impacts.

The Brattleboro Stormwater Master Plan (April 2023) and the Brattleboro Stormwater Infrastructure Mapping Project (August 2022) both identify potential stormwater improvements for the Kettle Pond area, which includes implementation of projects near the Brattleboro Union High School and the Town’s sand storage facility.

VTrans and Vermont Regional Planning Commissions released the 2023 US Route 5 State-Wide Bicycle Corridor Priority Assessment Survey Findings, which looked at municipal support to provide a safe means of travel via bicycle on or along a route adjacent to US Route 5 for the entire state of Vermont.

A Gateway Strategy for the Canal Street Commercial District was developed in 2001 for the southern half of this project's study area. Recommendations from this study included traffic calming, the creation of turning lanes, consolidation of curb cuts, upgraded sidewalks and street lighting, as well as improved connections to the surrounding residential areas and attractive pedestrian congregation areas.
