Start by talking through some of the information presented above with your child. Introduce the idea of pollution and that we need to reduce our pollution to help birds. This taps into a child’s natural inclination to care about animals and want to help them. You could ask: Do you know what pollution is? What do you think when you see trash on the street? Is that good for animals? Is it good for people? Litter is a kind of pollution, but we also release pollution into the air. Do you think we should put pollution into the air?

Talk about some of the ways you can reduce your pollution at home. (Check out this activity for inspiration.) Then, acknowledge that your family can't stop the pollution that causes climate change alone. You'll need lots of people to join together to reduce their pollution together. Talk about how much faster you can clean your room if two people do it, versus just one. The same thing goes for addressing climate change. Who else could you ask to reduce carbon pollution? What would you say to convince them? Why does your child think it's important to reduce pollution? Tell the story of Harriet and Minna to show how hundreds or thousands of people banding together can change the world.

If your child is interested, ask these questions to talk about the importance of working together: Think of a time when you worked on a team or worked with others to accomplish a goal. What went well? What was hard? How did it feel? Did you reach your goal? Why is it important to work with others to solve problems? Why is climate change so hard to fix by yourself? Think of a time when you felt powerful. What happened? Were there other people (friends, family members, teachers, coaches, etc.) who helped you feel that way?

Create a sign using a piece of paper or a dry erase board (whatever you have on hand) that says “Climate is my party because:” Then, fill in the blank. Your reason can be as short or as long as you like, and feel free to get creative and answer the question with a drawing, a poem, or more than one answer. Maybe your child wants cleaner air, or to protect birds, or to help the planet.

Send the picture to 3 friends or family members you want to join you in the fight against climate change. Have a conversation about why it’s important to you, and encourage them to submit a photo, too.
