AQUA LOCI: Andrea Draper (I dream in RGB)

Afterglow

Illuminations on the Merri Creek Trail, Naarm (Melbourne), Australia.

About the artwork and interactive map

Concealed from the road, the Merri Creek Trail is an oasis of lush greenery, small native creatures, and stories from the past. Afterglow adds to the environs’ narrative as the once familiar under-bridge structure transforms with unanticipated dynamic light.

Curiosity ignites as the unexpected audience responds, without notice, to the colourful moving images incongruous to the timeworn graffitied edifice.

People on their way to something else, slow down to watch, and stay longer. An interruption of their journey and expectations, creating an altered relationship with a familiar space.

The experience is temporary. The light from the machine is extinguished, the darkness advances, and the soft sounds of the waterscape become the focus once more.

About the artist

Australia-based Interdisciplinary artist, Andrea Draper, aka ‘I dream in RGB’, explores dynamic collages as moving image, which when illuminated in usually dark spaces, results in vibrant disruption of relationship with the environment.

Andrea embraces a digital layering of image manipulation, hand-rendered elements, patterning, and typography, to fuse visual art with graphic design.

Andrea often investigates cultural identity, including her Burmese ethnicity, a childhood in London’s East End and a later upbringing in Melbourne’s outer suburbia. This background inspires dialogues of diaspora, remixes of pop culture, alongside contemporary interpretations of her multifaceted lived experiences.

Projects include an eight-meter video above The Everleigh, Fitzroy, for the Gertrude Street Projection Festival, an art billboard sponsored by JCDecaux Australia, entry in the Fantastic Film festival 2023 and working with the Little Projector Company for a guerrilla projection at the Anstey Station Silo, Melbourne, for her Master of Creative Industry exhibition.  www.idreaminrgb.com
