The Epic of Momotarō (桃太郎)

Annotating Illustrated Maps and Images in StoryMaps

Introduction

The map was created as a combination of the artistic style of  "The land of make believe"  map by Jaro Hess (Hess 1930) and ink-style painting that can be seen in the mountains. The version of Momotarō used for this project is based on the children's book by MJ York  1  .

  • Peach trees were added in the top left corner in order to create an idea of a distance peach tree forest. The river winds throughout the mountains, and this ultimately carries the peach to the house of Momotaro's parents.
  • An oni castle was added to the top right of the map. While the castle is originally located on an island, the distances and locations have been altered slightly for artistic imagination and in order to prevent the image file of the map from needing to be too large.
