Program
Green Empowerment’s projects in Peru are aimed at increasing access to renewable energy, clean water, and sanitation infrastructure, as well as improving health and hygiene. In collaboration with local partners, we have contributed to a variety of projects including community-owned and -managed water and solar PV systems. Other projects have focused on food security and school-based health.
Partners:
Water For People - Peru ( Facebook )
Water For People exists to promote the development of high-quality drinking water and sanitation services, accessible to all, and sustained by strong communities, businesses, and governments.
Energía, Ambiente y Sostenibilidad ( Facebook )
Energy, Environment and Sustainability (Energía, Ambiente y Sostenibilidad) works to contribute to the well-being of rural and urban populations through renewable energy, efficient use of water and training to promote a sustainable environment.
Why Peru?
Much of Peru’s rural population struggles from a lack of access to clean water, energy, and basic sanitation. Only 66% of the rural population, a largely indigenous body, have access to safe drinking water; only 38% have access to safe and environmentally-friendly sanitation systems. Furthermore, 31% of Peruvian households still use wood or other biomass as cooking fuel, much of which is burned in unventilated spaces. As a consequence of these conditions, water-borne, sanitation-related and respiratory illnesses are endemic.
Peru Project Map
Since 2005, Green Empowerment and our partners have done over 50 renewable energy, water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) and conservation projects.
Click on the highlighted districts (municipalities) on the map above to learn more about which types of projects we have supported over the years.
All infrastructure is community-owned and managed and every project includes training components relevant to those systems, which are not captured in the map. Some older projects and all active projects are not included on the map.
Impact of Our Projects
- We recently finished a potable water project in El Chorrillo, where Green Empowerment and Water for People - Peru supported the installation of community water systems serving 31 households, including 23 water meters
- We are working with three health centers in Northern Peru to improve WASH infrastructure, impacting more than 7000 people
- As part of our effort to promote the efficient use of water in rural communities, we have installed more than 1000 water meters Peru since 2019, many of which were retrofitted to fit municipal water systems not installed by Green Empowerment or our partners
