Stormwater Best Management Practices

Slowing, Storing, and Treating Stormwater Runoff

Stormwater runoff is produced every time rain or snow is not absorbed directly into the soil. When land is paved the stormwater can no longer infiltrate into the ground where it can be naturally filtered by the earth’s soil. The stormwater facilities shown on this map play a vital role in treating stormwater by removing pollutants before entering local waterways. The City of Fairfax is dedicated to educating the public about the harmful impacts of polluted stormwater runoff so that residents can become partners in restoring and protecting our streams.

Stormwater best management practices (BMP) reduce or eliminate contaminants and pollutants that enter Fairfax City streams and, ultimately, the Chesapeake Bay. BMPs prevent downstream flooding by controlling the volume of stormwater runoff discharged from a site.
