Kelzang's Map Story
Kelzang is originally from the dzongkhag [district] of Mongar, in rural and remote eastern Bhutan. He currently resides in the capital city of Thimphu, the largest and most urban city in Bhutan, and studies music with other young adults with visual impairment. There are few opportunities like this in Mongar.
Kelzang's personal locations are not exact for the sake of his privacy. Some public locations are given with more accuracy
Where I live
I moved to Thimphu to study music. I also live at the music school.
Making music
I play the Yangchen, a Bhutanese instrument similar to a hammered dulcimer that is used in traditional songs and dances. I train at the Blind Music Training Institute.
Making my way in Thimphu
I most often need help navigating the difficult streets and stairs of Thimphu.
Getting a ride
Sometimes I use buses and taxis to get around.
Visiting a religious place
On auspicious days, I go to the Memorial Chorten in Thimphu.
Shopping at the market
I don't cook myself, but sometimes I buy fruits and vegetables at the main Thimphu market
My health
When I have a health problem, or need regular eye check-ups, I go to the National Hospital.
Where I'm from
My family lives in Mongar, in eastern Bhutan. The opportunities for me are in the capital, Thimphu.
