West Street Recovery (WSR) is a nonprofit organization in Houston that formed in response to Hurricane Harvey flooding, when the organization was on the ground rescuing community members and providing resources to those in need. Over time, their work expanded and they developed a horizontal organizing structure using the Popular Education Model and Jemez Principles for Democratic Organizing. A model for community-based organizations, WSR has built a mutual aid network in which community relationships are prioritized. Today, their work not only focuses on aiding the community during flood events, but also removing water-damaged materials and advocating for more equitable recovery efforts. WSR shares lessons learned about disaster recovery and organizing in Zines (Issue 2 and Issue 3). Among their accomplishments, the WSR network has repaired over 65 homes, built one flood resilient home, implemented flood resilient strategies, developed the Northeast Action Collective, and advocated for the Harris Thrives Resolution to incorporate equity in flood recovery.
