Trilobite Diversity
Abrupt appearance of trilobite orders in the fossil record
Introduction
Many groups of organisms appear abruptly in the fossil record, often with a high diversity of families. The different groups are not linked by transitional forms, but are separated by morphological gaps.
Nearly all phyla of marine animals known today are first recorded in Cambrian sediments, along with several extinct types. Trilobites are the most ubiquitous and varied organisms of this "Cambrian Explosion." Each continent has a diverse group of trilobites in Cambrian and Ordovician sediments, with no evidence of evolutionary ancestry.
Trilobites Around the Globe
Below, you will find a diverse selection of trilobites from GRI's fossil collection. Browse by scrolling the list of fossils on the left, or by location using the map on the right. Some entries have a "See in 3D" link, where you can inspect the fossil from every angle.

Geologic Column
Trilobites have been classified in twelve orders. Eleven of these appear in Cambrian rocks. Trilobite diversity appears abruptly, not as evolutionary theory predicts. In evolution, one would expect to find a record of gradual, incremental changes in transitional forms between separate groups. However, as evidenced by the Cambrian Explosion of trilobites, the larger differences exist from the beginning of the fossil record.
