Kilkenny County Council Community Climate Action Programme
2025
Kilkenny County Council, with funding from the Department of Environment, Climate and Communications, have awarded €511,000 to 22 Kilkenny communities to deliver a variety of local climate action projects. The programme supports communities, large and small, rural and urban, to build low carbon communities.

Thomastown Community Allotments
Upgrading and extending of the pollinator friendly bed to be more sustainable, bigger and biodiverse habitat. Upgrading of the brick herbs beds into herb/edible flowers/medicinal plants area. Supply and construction of timber frames/pergola around the growing beds. Construction of work bench for potting and teaching. Purchase of plants.

Tullahought Community Development
Making the Community Hall more energy efficient and comfortable by insulating the roof and upgrading the windows. They are also installing a new composter for use in their fantastic flower displays.

Piltown AFC
To procure wildlife/pollinator friendly hedging and to supply a sheltered bicycle stand

Windgap Community
Installation of Solar PV, bike repair station & water refill station at GAA Club. Also planting and habitat works at GAA for habitat and solitary bees

Three-fold Community Asset Trust (Westcourt)
A new larger, high-spec polytunnel to grow and sustain high-quality organic vegetables year-round and would allow the group to expand- growing more with better variety. This means more people will be consuming locally grown, organic vegetables with zero transport miles, zero refrigeration, and zero plastic packaging.

Kilmacow Community Centre
Upgrading heating system to electric heating with smart controls, and the installation of Solar PV panels.

Iverk Agricultural Show
Installation of rainwater harvesting system and the retrofit of internal lighting & storage heaters

Inistioge Tidy Towns
This project is now complete. Inistioge installed a water filling station in a public area which sees high footfall. The availability of clean drinking water will reduce the need to purchase single use plastic bottles and thereby reduce litter and lead to a cleaner environment.

Stoneyford Development Association
Retrofitting of Community Hall, upgrade lighting, radiators, water heaters, external door and wall insulation. Install thermal blinds, bike stands, bike repair station and the purchase of 5 junior bikes and helmets for shared bike scheme. Planting of pollinator friendly perennials.

Hugginstown & District Community Centre
Replacing the current lighting system in the local community centre with energy-efficient LED lighting, contributing significantly to energy conservation and sustainability.

Urlingford Town Team
Installation of Solar PV panels at the Hub and GAA Club. Installation of bike racks at the GAA Club, Community Centre and the Hub, as well as installing indoor water fountains at the GAA Club, the Hub and Community Centre.

Mullinavat Community Group
Retrofitting internal Lighting to LED, providing EV Charging Points and the installation of a Solar PV system at the Community Centre. Installation of water fountains at the Community Centre & the GAA Club. Bike Racks at the GAA Club and establishing a nature reserve at the GAA Club.

Happe House & Millenium Court
To plant both areas with native pollinator friendly planting to create a biodiverse corridor in the area. Increasing the raised beds in both sites to provide food and fruit for the communities and the service users in the buildings. Installation of composters as well as a polytunnel, and a number of raised beds and vegetable patches.

Lisdowney Community Centre & GAA Club
Replacement of existing lighting in the community centre with new energy efficient L.E.D light fittings. Replacement of existing window and doors in the community centre. Installation of a new drinking fountain with bottle refilling station to reduce the use of single use plastics. Installation of new bike racks. Creation of a new 2.5 acre wildflower meadow with bio-diversity nature walking trail. Planting of new bio-diversity bulb planting. The planting of new native hedging to infill the existing hedgerows.

Kilkenny Walking and Cycling Group
Acquisition of a fleet of bicycles and the purchase of helmets to ensure safety during cycling activities. This initiative not only reduces reliance on cars by encouraging cycling as an alternative mode of transport but also promotes a healthier lifestyle.

Callan Community Energy
Solar Generator Trailer - The funding will be used to purchase solar panels for our proposed solar generator and pay for fabrication works required to mount the panels and batteries etc. on the trailer.

Graignamanagh Hall
This project is now complete. Abbey Hall in Graignamanagh have installed Solar PV panels and an EV Charging Point, which will reduce the reliance on energy supplied from the national grid and reduce carbon footprint, enabling the hall to become more sustainable long term and maintain a high quality low cost facility for the use of the local community.

Ballyfoyle Development Group
Large Project incorporating multiple elements/locations locally.

Castlecomer Enterprise Group
Replacement of current lighting with new LED lighting. Insulation in ceiling as well upgrading storage heaters to new, modern, more efficient heaters.

Paulstown Development Committee
This project is now complete. Paulstown Development Committee have upgraded their internal and external lighting from halogen & florescent lighting to LED energy saving lighting throughout. They have also installed a water butt for water conservation.

Coolagh Pattern Committee
To establish a pollinator-friendly Community Garden with fruit trees and an edible native hedge, which will help to store carbon.

Tullaroan Development Association
Installation of Solar PV panels to reduce energy usage at the community sports facilities in Tullaroan as well as the replacement of sixteen sports grounds 2-phase metal halide floodlights with LEDs will further reduce the energy usage. Rainwater harvesting from the sports field buildings to supply the needs of the Walkway Maintenance Group for plant watering. Installation of native wildflowers as pollinators around the margins of the existing walkway
