“It’s a win-win for the analyst and the bean counter!”
When my department decided to collect high-accuracy elevation data in-house, I thought, “We’ll need to open up the pocketbook.” That changed when I discovered Bad Elf—affordable, accurate GNSS that impressed both analysts and leadership.
To be sure, we asked the Bad Elf team in Boerne, TX, for a demo. They performed a real-world data collection project, and the results spoke for themselves. “After receiving an impressive deliverable, we knew we had to get a Bad Elf Flex base and rover setup.” Since then, we’ve expanded its use, pairing it with our drone for orthophotos and 3D point clouds.

Proper Field Data Collection with Texas A&M University
Dr. Nikolas Smilovsky visited Texas A&M to share his geodesy and GPS expertise, collaborating with Dr. Humberto Perotto from the Department of Rangeland, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management. Together, they instructed students in proper field data collection methods, guiding them as they used Bad Elf GPS equipment and Esri Field Maps to map an outdoor lab area. Working in various environments, the students gained hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of how GPS technology functions in real-world conditions.
“Unmatched Accuracy and Outstanding Support”
Erick Tripp, Senior GIS Specialist at Brownsville Public Utilities Board, has been using the Bad Elf Flex and Flex Mini for nearly eight months and is impressed with the results. According to him, “The Flex consistently delivers better performance than my previous, more expensive equipment," even in challenging conditions where other brands struggled. After a recent firmware update, he also saw that "the Mini’s accuracy improved significantly—from 24.7 cm to just 10 cm," highlighting Bad Elf’s commitment to continually improving their products.
What truly stands out is the customer service. "Chris, Ken, and the team have been fantastic—quick to respond and always available to help," something that was lacking with other vendors. - Erick Tripp, Senior GIS Specialist, Brownsville Public Utilities Board
Great Reliability
Francisco Ramos, Senior GIS Technician at Brownsville Public Utilities Board, has been thoroughly impressed with Bad Elf products. "I’ve been surprised by how much more reliable Bad Elf products are compared to the competitor brand I’ve used and respected for years." Senior GIS Technician, Brownsville Public Utilities Board
In challenging environments like dense canopy, vegetation, and structures, where the competitor struggled, Bad Elf has not only met but "exceeded expectations."
Initially skeptical due to brand loyalty, Francisco has seen the benefits of "Bad Elf’s forward-thinking technology" in real-world applications. He adds that the customer service has been "exceptional—fast, friendly, and always there to support our team."

Ellensburg, WA Boosts Utility Mapping with Bad Elf Flex Extreme
The City of Ellensburg Washington uses their fleet of ten Bad Elf Flex Extremes to capture sub-centimeter accuracies on location and elevation data. “We needed to significantly update our utility map data to properly reflect implementation in the field. The Bad Elf Flex Extreme’s have given us that capability,” says Brian Cortese, Engineering Tech III. City of Ellensburg crews have collected over 50,000 GPS points with their Bad Elf Flex Extremes to date. Brian adds, “It’s a pretty amazing tool to have as a resource. Not only does it help us update our GIS mapping capabilities, but it also gives crews the ability to locate utilities when needed or in an emergency situation.”

Whenever Justin Cole, GISP, goes hiking or takes photos, he always brings along his trusty Bad Elf GPS to geotag and map his adventures. So, when Justin got his new Bad Elf Flex Mini Standard, he knew exactly where to put it to the test - the Adirondacks. He captured a few action shots over the weekend, showcasing the Flex Mini in action. "Setting it up with the capture clip and GoPro mounts was easy to do," commented Justin. He was also impressed with the accuracy - an average of 2.56 meters, even under the thick tree canopy!
Reliable Accuracy for Critical 911 Operations: Bad Elf Flex Mini at CCECD
Initially, the team relied on a hunting app, but it became clear they needed something more reliable. That’s when they switched to the Bad Elf Flex Mini Extreme paired with ArcGIS Field Maps.
Rafael Cruz, GIS Coordinator, described the shift as "a game-changer" after assessing their needs for better accuracy and GIS integration. With training provided by Bad Elf and superior tools, the impact was clear: “Field tests showed location data accurate to within one foot,” Cruz noted, marking a significant leap from previous tools.
"Bad Elf products are indispensable," Cruz concludes. "They’ve ensured that every address we assign is backed by reliable data—delivering the precision and dependability we need to safeguard our community’s safety and well-being."
Reliable Accuracy, Even Offline: Bad Elf Delivers for NCDOT
Paul Nunsucker, with over 30 years at the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), shared how the Bad Elf Flex Mini made all the difference on a recent project. "Without using the Bad Elf receiver, I wouldn’t have been able to capture accurate coordinates for the sign locations on SR-1214 in Montgomery County. I had no cell service whatsoever, but connected to my tablet, the Bad Elf receiver delivered impressive GPS accuracy."
Shannon Baylor of TranSystems (formerly SEPI) and a 20-year NCDOT veteran, echoed similar praise. "The system allows me to gather data offline, even when I don’t have a signal. In the past, I’d drive 6-8 miles just to find a decent signal. Now, I can document on-site and enter it later at the office." She also noted the Bad Elf's precise waypoint system, helping her generate more accurate information with ease.
“Spot on and easy to work with!”
Jodi Sabol, President of Magnify Utility Engineers, shared how Bad Elf helped them streamline their field tasks. Jodi’s team sought to consolidate field tasks and make data collection more efficient. "Both of these goals were accomplished once we started using the Bad Elf Flex Extreme on our projects. The precision was spot on, and their team was incredibly easy to work with."
Bad Elf has been instrumental in helping Magnify Utility Engineers "Magnify Results," enhancing both efficiency and accuracy in the field.
