Activity: StoryMap

The main task is to explore a series of maps of different places and compare the change. Create own map.

Task - 1. Take a look at the provided sample maps.

Greenland Island

Greenland Island - the largest on Earth (2.1 million km2) and the lowest population density (0.03 people / km2), is located in the northeast direction from North America. It is an autonomous part of the Kingdom of Denmark. More than 80% of the island's territory is glaciers.

Tuz lake, Turkey

Tuz lake is the second largest lake in Turkey, the main natural attraction in the vicinity of Ankara. The uniqueness of the lake is in the healing power covered with natural salt. Tuz lake reaches 80 km in length and 50 km in width, and the maximum depth is 2 meters. Salt is used for healing, cosmetic purposes and, of course, for cooking. In the rainy summer period, the lake turns pink and pink flamingos arrive. In addition to flamingos, almost 80 other bird species nest on lake: white-fronted goose, steppe kestrel and other local species.  More information.

Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan

Bishkek is the capital and the largest city of Kyrgyzstan and administrative centre in Chui oblast. The population for 2022 is 1,098.6. Bishkek is a modern cultural, political and economic center of the country. It is a city with wide streets and houses that were built during the Soviet union period and are quickly being built up at a rapid pace in a modern style.  More information.

Task - 2.

Using the World Imagery Wayback to find satellite images and in Task -3 use own swipe app in StoryMap. You can consider urbanization, land drought, glacier melt, new road etc.

2 - Search intrested area or place.

3 - Information about all of the imagery available. Select 2 imageries with different date.

4 - Click the Add this Release to an ArcGIS Online Map icon for the two selected images.

5 - Click the Open these versions in a new Web Maps. Fill the Title, Tags, Descriptions and Create Wayback Map.

6 - Create your account an ArcGIS Online or login and get all.

7 - Open Wayback Imagery Web Map in Map Viewer Classic. Select only 1 of your image layer and Save As in own folder. And do the same for 2 image layer. 2 image layers saved in your folder and create swipe map in your StoryMap.

Task -3 Create the StoryMap.

In this task you create swip map in your StoryMap.

1 - Click  StoryMaps . Log in with created Esri account.

2 - Click on the button +New story-Start from scratch.

3 - Enter the Title for the Story map and short description. It should be related to your saved image layer which is saved in Task 2.

4 - Design section helps to change the look of story. You can to change design.

5 - Write a short introduction about your story.

6 - Click on the button +Add content block +Swipe.

7 - Click the web map buttons.

8 - For every web map page select saved the Web map imagery ( Task-2). First select a web map of the current year and select a second web map of earlier years. For example: 2022 (Left) -2014 (Right).

9 - Click Place map without changing.

10 - Click Publish and share with others.

Additional task:

  • For selected area please find boundary layer on  website   or сreate a shape file to highlight the area under consideration.
  • Create an additional page with a mark indicating the studied area, with an added boundary and photos.
